bound by time
the lily of the valley//resilience
I used to hate the third chapter of Ecclesiastes, which begins with: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
I feel trapped by time. It’s a limitation I can’t overcome with sheer willpower, which is why that chapter grated on my nerves. Beauty is inevitable. Despair and evil are inevitable. And the inevitability of everything is terrifyingly monotonous.
Like the writer of Ecclesiastes, I struggle with pessimism, meaninglessness, and doubt. I look at flowers and wonder what’s the point of their growth. God commands them to grow just for them to die under the sun. Aren’t we the same?
When I look at flowers or the mirror with that mindset, everything does become meaningless. But when I look at the same flowers with eternity in my heart, I’m so full of joy and thankfulness. That the God who crafted each petal and clothed it in beautiful vibrant colors is also making me beautiful too. That one day, they’ll be no more death or sorrow.
I don’t curse time anymore or hate how the seasons change. Instead, I’m so grateful that spring brings delicate flowers to admire, with summer comes heat and excitement, that fall leaves are a treat to the senses, and that winter ushers in a fresh start.
For the final chapter of May, I plucked some lilies of the valley, which pale in comparison to your beauty and preciousness. Hear nature’s serenade and know that you’re alive for a reason.

lyrics:
Call me simple but I stop and smell each flower
Call me foolish but I sing with the sparrow
The sparrows and the lilies
Remind me of the truth
That there’s so much more to life
Then what I’ve been through
(Now I see that we’re)
bound by time (bound by time)
bound by season (bound by season)
bound by love (bound by love)
bound by reason (He's gotta reason!)
So come rain,
So come snow,
Come Hades,
I’m glad to go
Until then,
I’ll rejoice in Sundays and quiet mornings
Aging with time (Aging with time)
Blooming with the season (blooming with the season)
Rooted in love (rooted in love)
Alive for a reason (He is the reason!)
I still don’t know what growing up is
But I’ll go slow, hold on tight, He won’t let go
I’ve learned to laugh and smile before they fade away
Death and fear have no more power,
the Light is shining on me
(Can’t you see that we’re)
bound by time (bound by time)
Living through the seasons (living through the seasons)
bound by love (bound by love)
Love that I can’t reason (He is the reason!)
So come rain,
So come snow,
Come Hades,
I’m glad to go
Until then,
I’ll rejoice
In sweet friends
And slow evenings
Do you smell the lilies?
Can you see the stars?
Do you hear the sparrow sing?
How much you are loved
You can’t change yesterday, can’t get back what you lost
But the tears and the prayers cried are never for naught
You’re healing with time (healing with time)
Blooming with the season (blooming with the season)
Rooted in love (rooted in love)
Alive with a reason (He is the reason!)
